In the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War, an orphan named Frederich discovers a mysterious village in the forbidden corners of the Black Forest in Germany. His curiosity leads him on many adventures, through which he meets Maria Otten, an enchanting midwife who tends to the village. Meanwhile, a mysterious man, Wilhelm Gottfried, descends into a series of tunnels stretching across the Black Forest. The village, still struggling to find reason, suspects evil spirits in the forest as Frederich and Maria attempt to save them, threatening their lives and the traditions of Germany.
